Fillers are soft tissue expanders which have multiple uses. When injected under the skin they elevate the skin and correct pre-existing facial defects (wrinkles, folds, depressions) or augment existing facial structures (lips, eye brows). Most commonly used at present are fillers of the hyaluronic acid group and represent a present breakthrough for augmentation technology (Restylane, Juvederm).
They became a "gold standard" in soft tissue augmentation for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. They will continue to be mainstay in the treatment of the "aging face" as they are predictable and have a long history of safety and efficacy.
